As part of the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the declaration of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve, the FERMe project aims to analyse the current energy situation, proposing future scenarios in search of solutions applicable to the rural sector.

Specifically, the FERMe initiative aims to take advantage of opportunities to generate economic activity related to environmental protection, promoting a change of mentality and orientation in the local economy; to draw the attention of social agents and citizens to the need to face a change of model in the economic-territorial-environmental and energy development of territories with clearly defined limits; to promote the transformation capacity of Menorca’s agricultural sector, the main actor in the preservation of Menorca’s rural landscape and its biodiversity, towards the use of renewable energies in its activities; to create a favourable awareness for the adoption of measures for saving, energy efficiency and the implementation of renewable energies in all social and economic sectors of Menorca; and to involve Menorcans in the development of policies and strategies that allow them to face the transition to an economy not dependent on fossil fuels.

The recipients of the project are staff of installation companies and workers of construction companies in the conversion phase, workers of active agricultural farms, workers linked to the energy, industrial and service sectors concerned about the consequences of climate change and workers in the agricultural sector. The participation of unemployed people and professionals from the rural sector or with specific training in this sector will also be accepted.

The objective is aimed at the training of 50 recipients although the project will reach a total of 916 workers, the improvement of energy management of 12 farms and 4 agricultural cooperatives.
