Promotion of Green Employment in the La Palma World Biosphere Reserve (Green Employment in La Palma)

Empleaverde program

The purpose of the Green Employment project in La Palma is to transform a sector in crisis, that of construction and equipment, acting both on entrepreneurs and their companies as well as on the self-employed and employed workers who belong to it.

The purpose of the Green Employment project in La Palma is to transform a sector in crisis, that of construction and equipment, acting both on entrepreneurs and their companies as well as on the self-employed and employed workers who belong to it.

Thus, companies and employees will have functional, operational and training tools for the reconversion of their businesses towards green businesses, with a portfolio of comprehensive, non-vertical products and services by sector (construction, electricity, plumbing, heat-cold, carpentry), aimed at energy efficiency, waste recovery and self-generation of green energy.

The target customers of these companies and “reconverted” workers would be the following:

  • Single-family homes in rural areas
  • Buildings and homeowners’ associations
  • Industrial-business companies and parks
  • Bed & Breakfast
    Hotel facilities
  • Public Buildings and Facilities

The differential element lies in the degree of synergies and economies of scale that can be achieved by making comprehensive approaches to action in the property, in such a way that they are more profitable for their owners and therefore making them more inclined to invest time and money in the actions.

To achieve these objectives, the project will train entrepreneurs, professionals and workers in the construction, electricity, plumbing, carpentry and hot/cold sectors in energy efficiency, energy generation and waste management and processing, so that they can offer their customers a comprehensive service that encompasses all the aforementioned disciplines, so that in this way, they can the customer can obtain better results. The training will include the preparation of business cases and calculation of budgets for each of the aforementioned clients.

At the same time, the project favours synergies and collaboration between companies that until now were providing services in isolation.

Finally, actions related to the use of forest and agricultural waste will reduce the probability of fires in rural areas, which will generate a positive environmental impact and will have an impact on risk management.

The recipients of the training actions are workers, employed and self-employed, and employers in the following sectors: construction, plumbing, electricity, carpentry and hot/cold installers. Currently, the island of La Palma has about two thousand people working in these sectors.

The results achieved with the project will be:

  • Provide training to 90 recipients, although the project will reach 670 workers.
  • Create at least 25 new companies related to energy efficiency, energy cogeneration and waste management and recovery or incorporate these new lines of business into existing companies.
