The objective of the project is to try to advance and evaluate techniques for the collection, cultivation and experimental replanting of Posidonia oceanica in new possible seagrass recovery areas.
This objective will be achieved by creating a collaborative system including the public and private sectors and by encouraging the active participation of the fishing sector and the general public, through awareness and knowledge transfer to achieve the recovery of ecosystems.
In addition, the project includes an R+D component in which progress will be made in techniques for in vitro micropropagation of Posidonia explants .
This technique can be of great help in obtaining transplant material for future replantations that does not come from natural populations, thus favouring the conservation of the species and the Mediterranean in general.
AcciónPosidonia is presented as an initiative that aims to improve the environmental health of the Posidonia oceanica meadows by involving the fishing sector and citizens, while promoting environmental awareness in society and R+D in the mitigation of climate change.
The Posidonia oceanica meadows are an ecosystem of great environmental and socio-economic value, as they are one of the main carbon sinks in the Mediterranean, are a refuge and nursery area for numerous species of fishing interest and prevent coastal erosion.
1. This project entails a series of objectives that are intended to be addressed:
2. Train staff and volunteers for the collection of Posidonia seeds and their replanting.
3. Collection of at least 18,000 seeds, seedlings or fragments.
4. Replanting of an area equivalent to 3 hectares of Posidonia in different areas belonging to the Natura 2000 Network in different autonomous communities bordering the Mediterranean Sea:
- Valencian Community: Serra Gelada and Litoral de la Marina Baixa.
- Catalonia: Tossa de Mar (SAC Massís de les Cadiretes).
- Balearic Islands: Badies de Pollença and Alcúdia.
- Region of Murcia: Marine area of the Coastal Islets of Murcia and Almeria.
