The main objective of the ACUIECO project was to move towards more sustainable aquaculture in the marine space of the Rías Baixas of Galicia, giving continuity and reinforcing good practices for the reduction of waste generated by aquaculture activity. As a result of the activities, a guide of good practices for the reduction of marine litter in mussel farming has been developed.
Thanks to this project, a better knowledge of the management of the materials used in mussel farming (ropes, sacks, etc.) has been acquired, as well as the characteristics of the mussel fleet. On the other hand, the points of loss of materials and the needs to make the process more sustainable within the framework of a circular economy system have been identified.
Likewise, and with the aim of knowing the marine litter generated by mussel farming that reaches the beaches, its characteristics and volumes, the information generated by, among others, the Coador projects, promoted by the BATA Association, and the Interreg CleanAtlantic projects, Afundación Plankton and the II Network for the recovery of the ecosystems of the Atlantic Islands National Park, has been used. promoted by the Official College of Biologists of Galicia and the national park itself. With this information, an assessment has been made of the loss of materials based on raw material, reuse, time of use and employability.
After carrying out a diagnosis of the mussel production process, the application of possible corrective measures has been tested to try to reduce losses. Among them, the evaluation of the effectiveness of substitution of materials in the production process, evaluating the characteristics and initial behavior of wood in substitution of plastic chopsticks. The tests carried out have been an approach to continue researching.
On the other hand, the visibility of bateeira women has been promoted, with the production of two audiovisual pieces that show their fundamental role in the development of mussel farming.
