AQUABIRD: Highlighting the role of aquaculture in promoting ornithological diversity in the Natura 2000 Network

Pleamar program

Description

This initiative has consisted of the analysis of the interactions between natural populations of seabirds and aquaculture facilities in the Natura 2000 Network, on land and in cages at sea.

With this project, it has been possible to identify and value the natural capital and ecosystem services provided by waterbirds in areas where sustainable aquaculture models are developed.

In this way, the existing interactions between waterbird populations and the aquaculture activity carried out in the Natura 2000 Network have been evaluated and the role played by this activity in the conservation of ornithological diversity has been valued. With the material produced, workshops and dissemination campaigns have been carried out on aquaculture as a driver of biodiversity in the Natura 2000 Network.

The analysis of the interactions between natural seabird populations and aquaculture facilities in the Natura 2000 Network, on land and in cages at sea.

The results collected from the project reveal:

  • The areas where sustainable aquaculture is developed not only maintain most of the ornithological diversity but also enhance the importance of areas of special conservation for birds.
  • Marine aquaculture in cages practiced in eastern Spain is playing an important role as a focus of attraction and feeding area for seabirds and coastal birds, providing an ecosystem service related to the maintenance of protected species such as the European storm petrel, the Audouin gull, and the little tern, which feed in the areas surrounding the cages.
  • With the development of the project, perceptions of the aquaculture sector and interactions with birds have been positively influenced. This initiative consists of the analysis of the interactions between natural populations of seabirds and aquaculture facilities in the Natura 2000 Network, on land and cages at sea.
