AQUAHUB OFFSHORE- Growth, reinforcement and positioning of the AQUAHUB Network in the sustainable development of Offshore Aquaculture in Spain.

Pleamar program

Description

The development of marine aquaculture is limited by the lack of space to install or expand farmhouses due to competition for space and the use of coastal resources versus other activities.
Ocean aquaculture is presented as a technological alternative in the cultivation of marine species with a great potential for growth and, in turn, with a very low environmental impact and an improvement in the welfare of the farmed species. It is also a guarantee in the sustainable production of healthy marine foods in the medium and long term, which
currently requires a strong boost in the areas of research, technological development and legal regulation.
The project seeks, through the reinforcement of the AQUAHUB Network, to promote the development of Offshore aquaculture through multidisciplinary work, which through innovation, training and technology transfer lays the pillars for this new technology.

The overall objective of the project is growth, reinforcement and sustainability of the AQUAHUB Network in the development of Offshore Aquaculture in the environment of Blue Growth, strengthening the synergies established throughout the value chain of Spanish aquaculture and establishing links with the rest of the sectors involved in the Blue strategy and specifically
in everything related to the sustainable development of Offshore aquaculture.

Specific objectives of the project:

  • To reinforce, expand and deepen the work of the AQUAHUB Network for the better positioning of the Spanish aquaculture sector within the European Blue Growth strategy through the promotion of Offshore aquaculture.
  • To establish a national debate on the role of Offshore aquaculture as a key element of sustainable aquaculture development in the medium and long term, and to establish synergies with other non-aquaculture sectors that affect its activity.
  • To promote the creation of research and innovation programs as well as applied training that enhances the development of Offshore Aquaculture.
  • Carrying out through the RED a comparative analysis between OffShore aquaculture and coastal aquaculture in the areas of: environmental impact, animal welfare and adaptability to climate change.
  • Improvement of knowledge management, transfer of R+D+i results and networking of Offshore aquaculture.
  • A.1. Establish the AQUAHUB Network as a benchmark for Offshore aquaculture in Spain.
    • A.1.1 Expansion of the AQUAHUB Network.
    • A.1.2 Comparative analysis of knowledge of Offshore aquaculture in other countries.
  • A.2. Establishment of stable synergies with other sectors of the Blue Economy and Offshore aquaculture.
    • A.2.1 Creation of a Multisectoral WG.
    • A.2.2 Practical case of Regional Transversal Integration.
  • A.3. Promote the creation of research and innovation programmes.
    • A.3.1 Study of training needs of Offshore Aquaculture.
    • A.3.2 Proposal of training courses.
    • A.3.3 Proposal of innovation programmes.
  • A.4 Comparative Case Study of Offshore and Coastal Aquaculture.
  • A.5 Dissemination of Knowledge.
    • A.5.1 Press releases, publications on social networks, APROMAR website and high tide website.
    • A.5.2 Final Transfer Day.
    • A.5.3 Improvement of the Web App of the first AQUAHUB project.

With the AQUAHUB OFFSHORE project, it has been possible to consolidate the AQUAHUB network as an interdisciplinary network of Spanish aquaculture. New experts have been incorporated into the network and the information available on the development of offshore aquaculture in Spain has been expanded.

2 aquaculture seminars were held with 68 and 34 participants, in addition to a comparative study of the development of Offshore aquaculture with a region of Northern Europe whose progress in this production method is greater.

Likewise, a guide was created for the development of Offshore Aquaculture in Spain and the strategic lines to be followed, as well as a list of Future Professional Categories, a list of courses and a list of R+D+i programs to promote the development of Offshore aquaculture.
