BAJUREC II: Prevention of the Generation of Waste and its Inadequate Disposal in the Marine Environment, focused on Inshore Fishing Vessels and Recreational Boats

Pleamar program

Description:

After carrying out the work of the BAJUREC I project, materialized in the analysis of the survey of users of Clean Landscape and the survey of the situation of infrastructures in ports, a lack of sensitivity has been detected for the correct deposit of waste generated in ships and the lack of necessary infrastructures. Correcting this situation will facilitate proper waste management and less deposit of waste at sea. There is, therefore, a significant rate of improvement, acting together with those responsible for these port waste management infrastructures.

The ultimate objective of the project is to create a guide of recommendations and good practices to optimize waste management infrastructures for inshore and recreational boats in ports. Studies will be carried out on the waste management infrastructures present and proposals for improvements to be implemented in pilot ports will be made. Likewise, the effectiveness of these implemented recommendations will be analysed in order to be able to reflect them in the guide.

Continuation of the BAJUREC project of the 2017 call of the Pleamar Programme. As a result of the results of the first phase, two ports will be located (one for sport and the other focused on inshore fishing) in which to carry out pilot tests on the improvement and optimisation of the use and availability of waste deposit infrastructures in ports and inshore and sport fishing vessels.

The Clean Landscape Association and its partner, the National Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds, have achieved the objective of improving the management of waste generated by the fishing sector and recreational navigation. The analysis and assessments carried out in the pilot ports have been key to the subsequent design of the improvement measures in these infrastructures and to the drafting of the Guide to Good Practices in Infrastructures and Waste Management in Ports, aimed at those responsible for fishing and marina ports.

With the aim of improving the management of waste generated by the fishing and yachting sectors and reducing the amount of waste in coastal areas and the sea, actions have been carried out in this phase aimed at guaranteeing the visibility and availability of waste deposit infrastructures in ports. To this end, a fishing port and a marina, Port de la Selva (Girona) and Puerto La Duquesa (Malaga) were selected to carry out two pilot tests and analyse the causes why users of these ports could not correctly deposit waste in the corresponding containers.

The factors that conditioned the physical situation and characteristics of the waste deposit infrastructures in the test ports were also determined and proposals for improvement were shared that were subsequently implemented and served as the basis for the preparation of the guide, which has completed this second phase of BAJUREC and which aims to extend the knowledge obtained in the pilot tests to all Spanish fishing and marina ports. compiling good practices, management options, location and camouflage with the environment of these infrastructures for the deposit of waste.
