BAJUREC – Prevention of the Generation of Waste and its Inadequate Disposal in the Marine Environment, focused on Inshore Fishing Boats and Recreational Boats

Pleamar program

Description:

The project focused, on the one hand, on investigating the attitudes and knowledge about waste management generated during navigation carried out by inshore fishermen and recreational boaters. Likewise, the existing knowledge on the infrastructures available for the proper management of waste on board the ship and in port has been analysed and barriers have been identified that prevent its correct management.

Secondly, training and awareness-raising work were carried out. Thanks to the information collected in the previous phase, the appropriate material was prepared for this specific training for both groups. Likewise, awareness-raising actions were promoted so that the port authorities could provide waste storage systems adapted to the different types of waste and proceed to their proper management.

Execution date:

2018

General Objective:

Improve the management of waste generated by the fishing and yachting sectors and reduce the amount of waste in coastal areas and the sea, contributing to a better conservation of marine biological resources.

Specific objectives:

  1. Knowledge of the current situation of collection infrastructures in fishing and recreational ports, existing infrastructures on ships for the collection of waste on board, attitudes of users of fishing boats and recreational boats in relation to waste management.
  2. Improve waste management in ports by improving the management and adequacy, accessibility and service of waste collection infrastructures in inshore fishing ports and marinas and marine ports (actions on port managers).
  3. To promote the collection of waste on board through the modification of waste management habits by users of fishing boats and recreational boats and the incorporation of specific infrastructures for the collection of ships.

The exhaustive analysis carried out during the BAJUREC project on the behaviour of users of fishing and recreational boats, in relation to the generation of waste and its subsequent management, both in port and on the boat, has been key to the design of training and awareness actions on the problem of marine littering .

The project generated:

  • A bibliographic analysis on marine littering and an analysis of the results of 444 surveys carried out on recreational boats -385 inshore fishermen and 64 marinas-, as well as a group survey with fishermen’s guilds.
  • A series of workshops with boat manufacturers and designers, with which the relevant role of ports in the work of promoting waste management was identified – it is considered essential that ports allow boat users to deposit waste in these facilities.
  • A report on the state of the arts in terms of infrastructures for the deposit of waste from boats
  • Two guides of good practices to be used by those responsible for these ports as channels for the dissemination of appropriate practices for waste management

Finally, awareness campaigns and workshops were carried out aimed at users of recreational and inshore fishing boats on the importance of protecting the marine environment in all its areas, promoting the collection of waste on board through the modification of waste management habits and improving its management in the areas with the application of good environmental practices.
