Development of a selective fishing gear for Gran Sol

Pleamar program

Description

The project consists of the design of a fishing gear, through the use of new technologies to improve the selectivity of fishing gear and reduce unwanted catches, and therefore the environmental impact, in Gran Sol’s trawl gear.

ARVI has worked on improving the selectivity of trawling gear in Gran Sol to Reduction of catches of unwanted species (especially the case of horse mackerel) and juveniles of commercial species (especially megrim and hake), thus promoting selective fishing gear and reducing by-catches.

To this end, it has carried out different campaigns applying the FISHSELECT protocol to establish an optimal sampling plan in the on-board tests with the “pantalón” net and to be able to apply the results of the data collected in a design proposal for the Gran Sol Selective Network.

Improving the selectivity of trawling gear in Gran Sol to reduce catches of unwanted species

Objectives that have been achieved in the project:

  • To study how to reduce the catches of horse mackerel and juveniles of hake and roosters and therefore the environmental impact of the fishing gear of the Gran Sol fleet
  • To optimize the on-board testing process, by means of a “pants” net with 2 comparable flakes and to avoid bias in the estimates in the execution of the on-board testing process.
  • Development of new technologies for prediction and simulation of selectivity for the fishing ground and the species under study using the FISHSELECT protocol.
  • To raise awareness among shipowners of the importance of selectivity of fishing gear and selective methods, with a view to better fisheries management from all points of view (environmental, economic and social).
