Development of an integrated tool for the assessment and monitoring of shellfish resources

Pleamar program

Description

This multidisciplinary research project seeks to develop a simple and effective ICT system based on information on the biology of the shellfish resource of the Ría de Cedeira Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest and the Doñana Biosphere Reserve.

FUAC has designed a simple and effective ICT tool, based on information on the biology of the shellfish resource of the RMIP “Ría de Cedeira” and the Doñana Biosphere Reserve, the traditional knowledge of shellfish gatherers, and the use of ICT technologies compatible with the development of the usual tasks of shellfish gatherers. technicians and managers.

The strategy used has been based on the collection of traditional ecological knowledge (TEC) in the coquina fisheries in Doñana and Cedeira, and its integration into scientific knowledge. To this end, they generated spaces of trust for the transfer of information between scientists and shellfish gatherers, conducted directed interviews that have made it possible to collect not only biological aspects about the habitat or species but also socioeconomic aspects about the management, and the exploitation systems of the coquina banks in both localities, to finally transfer the significant information to more didactic supports (cartographies) and thus favor the understanding and the analytical reflection of this information.

Therefore, the CET has joined the mapping of the natural coquina bank of Cedeira and Doñana (SIG), based on biological sampling and biometric characterization, both parameters obtained by artificial vision (video cameras) and software, creating an integrated tool.

This integrated tool allows improving the management of stocks of species of commercial interest, and adapting it to other banks and species with high potential value for the business sector.
