ECOMARINOS – Network for the recovery of marine ecosystems in the Atlantic Islands of Galicia PNMT

Pleamar program

Description:

The project has been developed on the island of Sálvora, belonging to the Atlantic Islands of Galicia Maritime-Terrestrial National Park, an island with a great wealth of habitats and species that strengthens the ecosystem itself and from which the surrounding socio-economic sectors benefit. The presence of waste on the seabed and beaches generates an ecosystem and socio-economic imbalance that needs to be solved. For this reason, with the aim of minimising and preventing the loss of biodiversity, action has been taken in one of these enclaves of the park.

The sustainability of the project has involved integrating the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources in the local population, seeking the greatest possible participation, especially from the fishing sector individually or through the FLAGs. Work has also been done with researchers from the three Galician universities, research centres, third sector entities, vocational training centres, volunteers, social integration companies, associations, etc.

Actions have been carried out such as the creation and transmission of knowledge (scientific working group), cleaning of seabeds and beaches, as well as dissemination and communication, integrating the horizontal principles of equality and sustainability. In order to assess the correct implementation of the project, the actions involved the presentation of objectively verifiable results. To achieve the specific objectives, work has also been done with indicators of compliance with them.

Execution date:

2017

General Objective:

Conserve biodiversity and marine ecosystems from sustainability.

Specific objectives:

  1. To promote the knowledge, management and conservation of marine biological resources, especially in the Natura 2000 Network, marine protected areas in accordance with the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and other special spaces and habitats.
  2. Collect lost fishing gear and other marine debris.
  3. Encourage the participation of fishermen in the protection and recovery of biodiversity.
  4. To improve the state of conservation and the capacity for renewal of natural resources, biodiversity, geodiversity and the landscape, facilitating the fulfilment of environmental objectives established at international, national and regional level.
  5. Integrate equality and sustainability into biodiversity conservation.

The project has achieved its objectives with the development of the proposed activities and thanks to the collaboration of more than 26 entities of different types and nature, among which we highlight: Spanish Institute of Oceanography, Intecmar, Cetmar, University of Vigo, University of Santiago, University of A Coruña, Spanish Association of Marine Litter, WWF, Fishermen’s Guild of Aguiño, Galician Diving Federation, Bueu Sea Kayak Club, Portos de Galicia, GALP, Xefatura Comarcal de Ribeira da Consellería do Mar, Asnauga, Espeleo Club Aradelas, PNMTIAG and COBGA.

We highlight the following results:

  • Carrying out clean-up tasks on five beaches
  • The removal of 462.5 kg of waste, mostly plastic
  • The training, participation and awareness of 202 volunteers
  • The holding of ten working meetings, with 88 participants
  • The development of eleven training sessions, with 437 participants
  • The preparation of the following documents: Good practices to prevent the arrival of garbage at sea, Protocol for the collection of garbage and Protocol for the characterization of collected garbage

From a multidisciplinary meeting, a working group was created with representatives of the fishing sector, guilds, managers of the fishing territory and the Coastal Action Group. Knowledge management actions have been carried out from the creation of a working group made up of technicians, scientists and park conservators to define the current state of fishing gear in relation to marine litter, based on their knowledge of the territory and to carry out a SWOT analysis.

On October 20, FEGAS and the Bueu Sea Kayak Club carried out the cleaning of the seabed with the aim of protecting and recovering the biodiversity of marine ecosystems through protocols for the collection and characterization of garbage. The group that developed this activity was made up of fishermen from the port of Aguiño, divers, athletes and collaborators of the project. In total, 29 people attended and 192.7 kg of waste collected were removed including nets, ropes, ropes, pots, tires, containers and plastics, as well as footwear, wood, glass fragments and ceramics or metals.

Three other beach clean-ups were carried out, with a total of 173 volunteers who went to the beaches of Almacén, Bois, Zafra and Lagos and 268.4 kg of rubbish were collected, in addition to collaborating with Clean Atlantic in the collection of punt sticks.

The Coastal Action Groups Ría de Arousa, Ría de Pontevedra, Ría de Vigo-A Guarda (territorial scope of the Park and the fishermen's guilds integrated in them), Integrated Vocational Training Center A Granxa, Researchers of the University of Vigo, Santiago; IEO) and the Spanish Association of Marine Litter.
