The main objective of this project is to constitute a Network between entities from the fishing sector, the scientific world or the packaging sector in order to study the packaging that is currently used in the fishing sector and specifically in the retail sector and the new viable alternatives that minimize the use of plastics for the development of their activity. This will encourage knowledge sharing among participating organizations. This NETWORK will initially be made up of 4 Entities, however, it will be open to all those that can contribute or may be interested in this study.
In this way, viable and efficient alternatives for plastic materials within the fishing chain will be available.
Specific objectives of the project:
-Generation of a Network of entities for the exchange of knowledge and research on the use of packaging in the retail sector (and by extension in the fishing chain, since this sector uses packaging that comes from wholesalers, fish markets, but also uses those for the final consumer). During the development of the project, this network will be open to entities that may be interested and that can contribute knowledge.
-Carrying out a study on packaging (legislation, typology and composition and sustainable alternatives) and a specific guide -Informing the sector and consumers of the management of new materials-Disseminating
the project.

The main objectives of the ENVAPES project were to set up a network between entities from the fishing sector, the scientific world or the packaging sector in order to study the packaging currently used in the fishing sector and specifically in the retail sector and the new viable alternatives that minimise the use of plastics for the development of the activity. the carrying out of a packaging study and a specific guide, informing the sector and consumers of the management of new materials and the dissemination of the project.
To achieve these objectives, a Network of Collaborators was formed formed by AECOC, ECOEMBES, PTEPA, PACKNET, ANAPE, Mercacórdoba and La Rula de Avilés, with whom a series of meetings were held for the exchange of information and for the achievement of the study and the guide.
A study “Study of packaging in the fishing chain: Analysis of materials, use, composition and management” was carried out, which includes different aspects and uses of the packaging used throughout the fishing chain, with special emphasis on the retail sector, where a wide variety of packaging converges.
With the data, information and conclusions obtained through the previous study, a guide has been prepared “Guide on packaging placed on the market by the retail sector of fish products: legislation, management of packaging and new packaging” with information and recommendations on packaging and to reduce the impact generated by it. This guide tries to be a comprehensible and didactic material aimed at the retail sector, but also very useful for the rest of the fishing chain. Likewise, this guide can also be informative for the end consumer.
Some of the conclusions obtained are the following:
– All packaging generates a direct or indirect impact on the environment, i.e. zero impact is currently unattainable.
– Packaging is a necessary element for the transport and maintenance of fish products in hygienic and adequate conditions.
– The most widely used packaging materials in the fishing chain are plastics, mainly because they guarantee the quality and food safety of fish products better than other materials.
– Therefore, the current goal is the maximum possible reduction of environmental impact. Work is being done to improve the technical characteristics of plastic materials to reduce their impact on the environment and to search for alternatives, given the impact they generate on the environment, when they are not properly managed.
– European and national regulations focus on reducing the impact by: Improving the design of current packaging by reducing its weight, eliminating multilayers and dark colours, improving its technical characteristics as much as possible to reduce its impact on the environment. Design of recyclable and reusable packaging. Reduce the consumption of single-use plastics. To promote innovation and investment in the manufacture of new plastic materials, which are easier to recycle, and the efficiency of recycling techniques. Introducing new materials.
– The trend of new packaging is focused on manufacturing them from organic compounds obtained from renewable resources, being biodegradable and compostable.
– The correct management and reuse of packaging, especially plastics, is essential. The different links in the fishing chain, including the traditional fishing sector, have management and reuse systems for the packaging it uses.
– The collection, separation, recovery, recycling of materials is a very high cost.
– The best waste is the one that is not generated
– Correct management at the citizen level is essential to prevent packaging from having an impact on the environment. We can all collaborate in this sense since we all consume products contained in packaging.
