FISH4KIDS: Eating fish is healthy, sustainable and healthy

Pleamar program

Description:

The basis of the project is to raise awareness among future generations of the importance of the protection and recovery of marine biodiversity for future fish consumption; how we can conserve biological resources; how the sector and the administrations work together to limit the impact of fishing and adapt it to the protection of species, all without giving up eating fish, moreover, giving guidelines on how this product should be consumed, and explaining the framework of fisheries control and protection of the European environment.

We are aware of how difficult it is to reach younger audiences. Therefore, working in schools hand in hand with Serunion Norte S.L. is a great opportunity. We believe that activities have to be divided according to age ranges. We believe that through them it is easier to reach the rest of the population, because they will transmit what they have learned to their families, having a radial effect on the population.

Thanks to our collaborators we will also be able to get the materials to more schools and children. Many of them have already been doing work with the little ones.

General Objective:

To raise awareness among future generations of the importance of protecting and recovering marine biodiversity for future fish consumption.

Specific objectives:

  1. Enhancement of European fisheries and aquaculture.
  2. Raising awareness of the importance of protecting and recovering marine biodiversity for future fish consumption.
  3. To promote greater knowledge in the following areas: Marine biodiversity/ fishing gear/ fish marketing/ protection of the marine environment/ Natura 2000 Network and marine reserves/ fisheries and aquaculture.
  4. Knowledge of the sustainability of fishery and aquaculture practices, processes and products, promoting sustainable economic activities in Natura Network areas.
  5. Disseminate the project.

FEDEPESCA has successfully developed, and together with its partner SERUNION NORTE S.L., the awareness project Fish 4 kids, which responds to the need to make school children aware of the importance of the protection and recovery of marine biodiversity for future fish consumption.

Within this awareness-raising framework, various activities have been developed aimed at enhancing the value of fisheries and aquaculture and promoting greater knowledge about marine biodiversity, fishing gear, fisheries marketing and the Natura 2000 Network. We highlight the following:

  • Holding a contest on Instagram aimed at students between 12 and 18 years old. A trivia game was designed, in which a series of questions were posed distributed by thematic categories related to marine biodiversity, fishing gear, fisheries marketing, protection of the marine environment, Natura 2000 Network and marine reserves, and fisheries and aquaculture.
  • Layout of an informative poster and distribution of 300 copies in 30 schools.
  • Production, printing and distribution of teaching materials for children between 6 and 11 years old. 7,000 game books have been distributed in 33 schools nationwide.
  • Organization of a race in the municipality of Colmenarejo in the Community of Madrid in which more than 100 runners participated.
  • Reform of the website of the Pescaverde project to introduce a tab with the information and contents of this document.
  • Holding six face-to-face sessions in Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Galicia, Andalusia and Navarra to teach the tools described above to the coordinators of monitors of the schools, Associations of Mothers and Fathers of Students (AMPAS), as well as to professionals of Serunion Norte S.L.
  • Preparation and submission of two press releases to the FEDEPESCA media database.
  • Publication of two reports in the magazine Comepescado about the project, with a print run of 1,600 copies
  • Sending of seven emails to members and FEDEPESCA database (2,000 addresses).
  • Celebration of the day of presentation of results with 34 people in a forum of free attendance.

In conclusion, environmental awareness projects such as Fish 4 kids, which include educational and awareness-raising actions aimed at future generations, are essential to guarantee the recovery, protection and conservation of marine biodiversity and habitats and, consequently, the sustainable consumption of fishery resources. In this area of action, the search for and generation of synergies, both of projects and of agents involved in the management, conservation and exploitation of the marine environment, is of maximum interest.
