The PESCARES project has launched a collective initiative to promote and disseminate the work of two Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest (RMIP) (Cabo de Gata-Níjar, Almería and Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas, Murcia) and encourage the practice of safe and responsible diving in the protected areas of these reserves.

To promote and disseminate the work of two Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest (RMIP) (Cabo de Gata-Níjar, Almería and Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas, Murcia) and to encourage the practice of safe and responsible diving in the protected areas of these reserves

  • The management of the PIMMR has been improved through the creation of a responsible Diving Manual, Standards and Protocols, endorsed and participated in by the actors.
  • The censuses of diving schools and clubs licensed to practice activities in the two RMIPs have been updated, as well as the vessels authorized to fish in the artisanal fishing sector.
  • Information for the conservation of fishery/natural resources has been improved through the application of standards taught by the heads of centres to monitors and divers.
  • The safety of divers has been promoted by applying protocols agreed between the SGPM, AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITIES, fishermen and schools.
  • It has contributed to expanding the knowledge and understanding of operators through meeting days, highlighting the unique and common benefits of these protected natural areas.

Specific manual on requirements, safety standards and the importance of safe and responsible diving in the dive areas integrated in the two RMIPs.

Interesting facts:

  • 15 entities from the fishing sector, 7 diving schools, two scientific entities and the professionals and volunteers of the two Information and Maintenance Centres of the RMIP have actively participated in the preparation of the audiovisual materials, the manual and their dissemination.
  • At least 700 professionals (leadership levels) in the recreational diving sector and 35,000 qualified recreational divers have received specific information on requirements, standards and the importance of safe and responsible diving in protected areas of fishing interest.
  • 430,000 citizens from different Autonomous Communities have received information on the work carried out in the RMIP.
