GEPESCART 2: Evaluation of artisanal fisheries in coastal wetland management and expansion of knowledge of eel and mulilids in the Iberian southeast

Pleamar program

The general objective of GePescArt 2 is to expand information on the biology and ecology of sensitive species of fishing interest (European eel and several species of mugylids) and their presence in protected coastal wetlands in the Iberian southeast, and to assess and reduce threats to these species through artisanal fisheries management.
In this way, continuity is given to the previous projects of GePesAng and GePescArt in which information on these species was already provided.

Among the main objectives of the project, the following stand out:

  • To expand the available information on sensitive species of fishing interest, highlighting the European eel and the different species of mullet present, as well as some threats they face in protected coastal wetlands.
  • Reduce the incidence of some of the problems through demonstrative actions with the support of traditional fishing methods, awareness and social participation.

The project aims to expand the previous information of other projects on the local distribution, biology and ecology of sensitive species of fishing interest, highlighting the European eel and the different species of mullet present, as well as some threats they face in protected coastal wetlands. In addition, it seeks to address and reduce the incidence of some of the problems through demonstrative actions with the support of traditional fishing methods, awareness, social participation and management proposals. The main actions planned are:

  • Monitoring of fish stocks of fishing interest.
  • Control of invasive alien species.
  • Threat assessment and detection of black spots for fish.
  • Awareness-raising, participation and knowledge transfer.
  • Management proposals.
