Description
The “Isla Verde” project promotes awareness-raising actions to raise awareness among boat members of the importance of the correct collection and management of waste and to achieve a reduction in the amount of waste that ends up in the sea. This waste affects the quality of the waters, the seabed and fishing productivity itself and can also pose a risk to human health and a problem for safe navigation.
To this end, the ships have been equipped with containers for the selective collection of waste. Once it arrives at the port, the waste will be properly evacuated and delivered to an authorised manager, for which it will be guaranteed, through the use of new technologies – a computer tool based on identification by QR codes – a traceability of said waste, allowing the exhaustive control of the same until its final destination.

The “Isla Verde” project promotes awareness-raising actions to raise awareness among boat members of the importance of the correct collection and management of waste and to achieve a reduction in the amount of waste that ends up in the sea.
The waste analysis tool has been implemented on a small number of vessels for the final development of the traceability system and the adaptation of the “green island” format (waste container on board) in each type of vessel, with the intention that the entire fishing fleet will progressively join the initiative.
With the aim of raising awareness in the fishing sector, guides have been published with practical recommendations for correct management and separation of waste, as well as an informative video of the project.
