ICON – Initiative for the promotion of marine culture and knowledge of the ocean, fisheries and aquaculture as emblematic sectors of the blue economy in Spain

Pleamar program

Description

The ICONO project aims to promote marine culture and knowledge of the ocean, taking advantage of the dissemination and training effort carried out by multiple organizations in our country to establish a cohesive strategy, created in an open and participatory way by the entire interested community. The project focuses in particular on fisheries and aquaculture.

To this end, all the agents involved in the dissemination and promotion of knowledge about the oceans will be energized, a catalogue of relevant experiences and dissemination materials will be created around the Ocean Literacy concept and a roadmap will be formulated in a participatory way to comply with its principles. In this way, it is intended to consolidate and project the efforts of Ocean Culture in Spain for consideration at the international level, through the First Spanish Conference for the Promotion of Knowledge about the Oceans (CEPCO).

General:

To promote marine culture and knowledge of the ocean among all levels of society, involving all interested agents and making more visible and accessible the efforts made in Spain in terms of training, dissemination and communication of knowledge about the sea and its resources, especially on the inseparable relationship of the ocean with two of the emblematic activities of the blue economy in Spain, fisheries and aquaculture.

Specific:

1. Dynamization of all agents that carry out dissemination and communication of knowledge and promote education about the ocean in Spain.

2. The identification, design of a classification and cataloguing of past experiences, of available materials and the enhancement of good practices of dissemination, communication and training on the ocean aimed at the different strata of society, contributing to feed initiatives already underway that are insufficiently developed, with a similar purpose (REDUCAMAR).

3. To raise awareness in society about the importance of the ocean on life on the planet and about the implications of its decisions and activities on it, directing these efforts, as far as possible, to understand the need and opportunities arising from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.

4. Participatory formulation of an inclusive vision, strategic objectives and guidance for future efforts on ocean culture and knowledge.

5. The national and international projection of the efforts, actors and sectors involved in the promotion of marine dissemination and education. Future orientation of ocean culture in Spain for consideration at the national and international level, within the framework of the efforts on Ocean Literacy.

7.5 Promotion of the ICON Conference and its outcomes

The ICONO project has made an important contribution to the cohesion of efforts in dissemination and education about the ocean in our country, having also significantly projected these efforts in the international context. Among the actions integrated in this project are:

Dynamization of the Community of ICONO agents, with more than 250 organizations of different kinds throughout the country registered as potential collaborating agents of the project, thus generating a network of professionals in education, consulting and environmental dissemination

A repository of materials of dissemination and education experiences has been generated for reuse and use in the dissemination of good practices. A total of 169 contents have been validated – didactic, communication and informative resources on the ocean and on activities that are carried out in the marine field, highlighting the contents on fishing and aquaculture as emblematic activities of the blue economy in Spain – which have been sent to the Biodiversity Foundation for its dumping in the Pleamar Resources tool.

Celebration of the “I Spanish Conference for the Promotion of Knowledge about the Ocean” in virtual format, with the attendance of a total of 97 participants in the morning session and 53 in the participatory workshops carried out during the afternoon session. In addition to the presentation of the ICONO Project and its results, during the development of the project, eight presentations were made by other organizations, with the common interest of contributing to disseminate knowledge about the ocean and its resources and achieve a more sustainable relationship with the marine environment by the whole society. During the afternoon session, the workshops were organized in parallel sessions. In the first part, they focused on the proposal and debate on the challenges for marine dissemination and education in Spain and, in the second, they talked about new lines of action to be promoted to achieve each of the proposed challenges, with the aim of including them in the preparation of the 2030 Strategic Agenda. Finally, participants in the conference and workshops were encouraged to participate in the public consultation process, to ensure that the final version of the Strategic Agenda was legitimised by its participatory nature thanks to a relevant representation of the community of target entities.

Preparation of the 2030 Strategic Agenda for the promotion of ocean culture and knowledge in Spain. It arises as a result of a broadly participatory process, which began with a prior consultation with the community of agents involved in the project and continued with the debate on the diagnosis and the proposals collected during the ICON Conference. Finally, the draft of the 2030 Agenda went through a final review and validation process.

Promotion of the materials and the agenda of activities, through the websites of the Pleamar Programme and the CETMAR Foundation, and implementation of new awareness-raising actions. These activities include activities organised by the project, such as the virtual colloquium “O mar do Noso”, the family awareness activity “Empordá Mar” or the exhibition “As Illas: a sea of Stories”. Likewise, it collaborated with entities such as the Network of National Parks (EUROPARC) and participated in events such as the First Oceanic Meeting, the “Sea of Seas” festival or the “Seas Week forever”. On the other hand, representatives of the project participated in a Panel Discussion on Marine Education Research, organized at the international level, and in the workshops EU4OCEAN.

New informative content was created, such as a Decalogue of equality, with recommendations and good practices based on the review of studies in the field published by the Women’s Institute and with the occasional consultation of specialized associations. Likewise, the publication “Seven things about the ocean that you should know” was prepared, published on the CETMAR website and on its social networks, as well as a model, in 3D format, on the coastal outcrop, designed by CETMAR’s Marine Technologies Unit.
