MARAVES: Birds and fishermen, allies for a sea of biodiversity

Pleamar program

MARAVES emphasizes the integration of the professional and recreational fishing sector for the good management of the marine environment in general, and birds in particular, placing the emphasis on the Natura 2000 Network of the Spanish Mediterranean. The project thus aims to promote the collection of information by the fishing sector, in addition to advancing in the development of mitigation measures. It also seeks to explore and minimize the impact of the accidental capture of live birds. It also aims to support administrations in the development of the national plan on by-catch and the fulfilment of their international commitments. Finally, it seeks to disseminate the work carried out and contribute to the awareness of the fishing sector in particular, and society in general, in relation to the conservation of seabirds and the marine environment.

The MARAVES project aims to improve knowledge about the occurrence of seabird bycatches, the factors that lead to them and their impact on the population, as well as to seek measures to minimise them, both by professional fishing (with particular attention to bottom longlines) and recreational fishing, through a collaborative approach that involves the sector, promoting a sustainable and environmentally friendly fishing model, while ensuring the economic and social viability of the activity, with particular attention to the marine Natura 2000 Network.
