PescaSOS: Management and sustainable use of fishery resources on the Murcia-Almeria coast

Pleamar program

The project aims to contribute to the conservation and sustainable exploitation of marine resources and the sustainable economic development of Natura 2000 Network areas and Marine Reserve of Fishing Interest (RMIP) on the Murcia-Almeria coast.

The Columbares Association has carried out an initiative to contribute in a sustainable way to improve the management and conservation of fishing resources, with the active participation of all the actors involved (professional fishermen, restaurants and traders, administrations and citizens). Among its objectives has been significant the achievement of sensitizing the local population and tourists about the importance of Marine Reserves and artisanal fishing for the conservation of marine biodiversity and the regeneration of fishing resources.

The main objective of the project is to contribute in a sustainable way to improve the management and conservation of fisheries resources, with the active participation of all the actors involved (professional fishermen, restaurants and traders, administrations and citizens).

  • This initiative has launched an awareness campaign with an estimated 12,000 people benefiting from the dissemination. Among the actions carried out has been an extensive program of activities, workshops and production of audiovisual materials.
  • Participation forum with all actors for the establishment of a roadmap with 10 management proposals for the Reserve and its area of socio-economic influence.
  • Study and strategy to make visible the traceability of fish from artisanal fishing
  • Workshops and/or talks on the valorization of artisanal fish products on beaches and markets.
  • Study and Conference on Fishing-Tourism resources in the area of action of the project in the Region of Murcia.
  • Summer film-forum series on Fisheries, Biodiversity and Marine Reserves with at least 5 screenings.
  • Workshops on the ecological values of Marine Reserves and their role in the conservation and regeneration of fishery resources.
  • Travelling exhibitions of underwater photographs of the Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve and the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Marine Reserve.
  • Documentary “Back to the Future”.
