POLYBRIS: Recovery of plastic waste present in marine litter for its recovery in products that contribute to the ecological balance of the marine environment through circular alternatives with a local participatory approach

Pleamar program

POLYBRIS promotes the sustainability of the marine environment and participation thanks to the circular use of plastic waste present in marine litter by collecting it in the sea and on beaches. The project contributes to mitigating the impact with its action proposal, in which it proposes new lines of recovery for these plastics, and its results by obtaining value-added products with pollutant retention capacities and other possibilities, which will reduce the negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems, and contribute to their good environmental status. The main result of the project will be the ability to generate value-added products through technologies based on optimised thermochemical processes such as pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) and gasification. Thanks to the characteristics of the different products obtained, different possibilities will be detected to recover or eliminate the plastics present in marine litter.

POLYBRIS proposes the implementation of a recovery line for plastics present in marine debris, focusing on the elimination of both organic and inorganic pollutants, generated by economic activities linked to the sea. This includes the treatment of wastewater from bivalve mollusc treatment plants, fish farms and marine product processing plants. With this, it seeks to actively contribute to the improvement of the environmental status, through the fulfillment of the following objectives:

  • Promote and disseminate local innovation among entities in the fishing sector, changing ways of doing or thinking about the collection of marine litter.
  • To learn about the current problem of the predominance of plastics in marine litter and to expand the possibilities of recovery in products that contribute to the recovery or elimination of marine litter.
  • Develop and validate specific processes for the thermochemical recovery (pyrolysis, HTC, gasification) of plastic waste present in marine litter through new lines of recoverable products such as carbonaceous solids (biochar and hydrochar) and a syngas.
  • Achieving the circular use of marine litter composed of plastics through optimised thermochemical recovery processes
  • To assess the environmental impact and economic viability of the implementation of waste recovery actions.
