Description

The project consists of the preparation of a pre-assessment document of the purse seine fishery of the three main species of skipjack tuna – skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacres) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) – for the OPAGAC association and the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), with the aim of subsequently designing a project for the improvement of the fishery (FIP) carried out by this fishing fleet.

The overall objective of the project has been to contribute to the sustainability of fisheries management of tropical tuna stocks. Through the development of Pre-evaluation of the fisheries management of OPAGAC fleets against the standards of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). It has been possible to establish the technical basis to develop a FIP (Fisheries Improvement Project) and where concrete recommendations are gathered to carry out projects to improve fisheries management according to MSC standards.
