Prevention and mitigation of fish escapes in open ocean aquaculture

Pleamar program

Description

The project has evaluated the processes by which escapes occur and their presence in habitats of the Natura 2000 Network with the aim of reducing the economic loss of aquaculture companies and the environmental impact, through the development of a recapture plan, the proposal of mitigation measures and the design of a training and educational plan on the prevention of escapes.

Evaluation of the processes by which escapes occur and their presence in habitats of the Natura 2000 Network.

They have developed a guide of good practices that will be used for the management of leaks in order to reduce losses. This guide recommends that when escapes occur, a contingency plan should be put in place, which allows you to act quickly to avoid further losses and promote recapture. In this regard, ESCAFEP has prepared a manual to mitigate the effects of fish escaping from fattening cages.

Another result of the project is based on the recommendation to monitor and control the presence of escapes in the catches of professional and sport fishing, as well as in areas of special interest for their conservation, such as marine reserves.

Elaborated material:

  • Good Practice Guide for Escape Management in Marine Aquaculture: Prevention (Vol. I).
  • Good Practice Guide for Escape Management in Marine Aquaculture: Mitigation (Vol. II).
