The general objective of RE-MAR III is to reduce marine litter through the collection, treatment and prevention of its generation with the collaboration of the fishing sector, using citizen science as a tool for environmental stewardship throughout the marine space of the Galician Atlantic arc.
The specific objectives are:
Based on the experience and knowledge acquired in past editions, new actions have been carried out and the guarded spaces have been extended to the entire area of influence of the Galician Atlantic Arc. In this way, RE-MAR III has carried out training activities, marine litter collection days and awareness campaigns, both in terms of waste management and the protection of Natura 2000 Network areas. In addition, boats have been audited in terms of waste management, a waste management model has been defined in boats and new volunteers and allies have been added to complement the work that had been done.
All in all, the results of the RE-MAR III project can be summarised in the following points:
Audited 10 ports and more than 100 vessels in terms of waste management.
Granting of more than 90 “Blue Vessel” guarantee seals, a badge, created by AMICOS in the RE-MAR I project, to identify those vessels that stand out for their good practices in the management of the waste generated.
Preparation of a report with proposals for improvement in the management of waste from ships.
Training for 107 people, 79 of them belonging to vulnerable groups, on issues related to the current needs of the fishing sector and the opportunities offered by the blue economy.
Development of 40 actions to collect marine waste, one ton in total, with the participation of more than 1,500 people: young people, workers and users of recreational companies, linked to marine environments and fishermen’s guilds/shellfish gatherers’ associations.
Dissemination of an awareness campaign in different schools, ports and beaches in the area of influence of the Galician Atlantic Arc. In total, almost 60 awareness days in which more than 4,000 people participated.
Generation of audiovisual material to complement the informative task to reduce the amount of marine litter.
