REDES DE ESPAÑA: Design, creation and implementation of a national certification for the management and recycling of discarded fishing gear and nets through innovative processes for their return to the circular economy

Pleamar program

CEPESCA, coordinator of the project group together with the National Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds (FNCP) and the Automotive Technology Center of Galicia (CTAG), aware of the environmental challenge represented by discarded fishing nets and gear, has opted for the implementation of a certification for the management of fishing nets and gear that have reached the end of their useful life, promoting their return to the economy circular.

The main objective of the REDES DE ESPAÑA project is the establishment of a system for the collection, transport and recovery of discarded fishing gear that guarantees the entities that produce the waste its traceability and reintroduction to the market, moving towards the goal of zero waste.
To give global scope to this challenge, the FNCP brings together all the representative entities of the Spanish fishing sector.
In addition to the recycling of nets and gear, the introduction of innovative techniques is proposed, in collaboration with CTAG, to find ways out towards circularity, through the design of new materials derived from them for the automotive, naval, aeronautics, etc.
At the same time, the project seeks to raise awareness of the problem of single-use plastics, the care of marine habitats and the circular economy, incorporating gender approaches and the inclusion of disadvantaged groups through communication and dissemination actions to society.

  • The “REDES DE ESPAÑA” brand will be created with a new certification and a guide document, including training sessions in Spanish ports.
  • A system will be developed to manage the storage, transport and recovery of discarded fishing gear, obtaining the necessary permits and contacting entities to reintroduce these components into the market.
  • A protocol for storage will be established and specific containers will be installed if necessary.
  • The collection of nets and gear will be managed, implementing a traceability system to ensure their treatment and reintegration into the circular economy.
  • Discarded materials will be cleaned, classified and recovered, researching innovations and delivering the products to collaborating entities for reuse.
  • A communication plan will be created with a logo, brochures and informative material.
There will be two events on sustainability, especially in the Natura 2000 Network, five news in the media, two monthly publications on social networks, a video and informative day and a report on the gender perspective.
