RemediOS-2: Design and evaluation of strategies for the development of restoration aquaculture of the Mar Menor flat oyster

Pleamar program

RemediOS-2 is part of the Initiative for the recovery of the flat oyster of the Mar Menor and aims to give continuity to the results obtained in RemediOS-1, in which the proof of concept of obtaining flat oyster seed from the Mar Menor in hatchery was carried out, in addition to dissemination and transfer actions to administrations and fishermen.
New areas with the presence of broodstock will be located to obtain oyster larvae in hatcheries and study their genetic diversity, develop and assess the pilot action of reef on the bottom using remote setting techniques on innovative collectors and on a floating platform for the bioextraction of nutrients (=aquaculture) in the water column.
It is planned to carry out management and governance reports of the Initiative that will allow progress in the implementation of the aquaculture activities of restoration of flat oysters, as well as environmental education activities and blue economy workshops.

The general objective of RemediOS-2 is to define and evaluate different strategies (scientific-technical, environmental education, management and governance) necessary for the development of restoration and bioextraction (aquaculture) actions of nutrients with the European oyster, Ostrea edulis, in the Mar Menor lagoon. The general objective is divided into the following specific objectives:

  • Assessment of the genetic diversity obtained in the oyster produced in RemediOS-1.
  • Production of Mar Menor oyster seed from wild broodstock and the RemediOS-1 generation.
  • Development and assessment of two pilot actions in the Mar Menor:
    i) reef on the bottom using remote setting techniques on innovative collectors and
ii) floating platform for the bioextraction of nutrients (=aquaculture) in the water column.
  • Develop a Spatial Management Plan for the native oyster in the Mar Menor for the development of bottom restoration and bioextraction/aquaculture actions in the water column.
  • Define a Roadmap to achieve the classification of the waters of the Mar Menor suitable for the cultivation of bivalves.
  • Participate in the activities of the European NORA network for the recovery of native oyster populations.
  • Raising European funds.
To assess options for the presentation of a European proposal (Horizon Europe, Interreg, Nature Restoration Law, LIFE…) for the recovery and aquaculture of native oysters.
  • Develop a governance model for the Mar Menor Oyster Initiative (MMOI).
  • Establish bridges between the private sector and the MMOI that allow public-private collaborations in the recovery of the Mar Menor oyster.
  • To provide new resources to the fishing sector of the Mar Menor through oyster aquaculture.
  • Diversify the use of the salt canals of the Mar Menor.
  • Encourage the private sector to invest in oyster aquaculture as an ecosystem service and as a business opportunity.
  • Raise public awareness of the impact of human activities on coastal ecosystems.
  • To raise public awareness of the ecosystem services provided by oysters.
  • Involve citizens in the recovery of degraded coastal ecosystems. To make the project and its results known to society.
  • To create a favorable and active current of opinion on the recovery of impacted ecosystems through nature-based solutions.
