REPESCA: Evaluation and improvement of the survival rates of fish and crustaceans caught by traditional fishing gear in Cádiz

Pleamar program

Description

Currently, Europe limits fishing discards, imposing an obligation to land all catches subject to quota or minimum sizes.
This makes it necessary to improve the choice of fishing gear, minimizing bycatch.
However, exemption from the landing obligation is allowed for species with high survival and resilience after the capture process.
This project focuses on the assessment and improvement of survival in traditional fisheries considered poor in data.
In this way, it will contribute to minimising the negative impact of fishing on the ecosystem.

Its actions will focus on the fishing reserve at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River and on the still unestablished fishing reserve of Conil (Cádiz).
The objective is tolay the methodological foundations for the study and improvement of survival and physiological recovery in traditional fisheries, so that they can be exported to other fishing gear and areas.

General Objective:

The general objective of this project is to evaluate the survival and recovery rates of species caught by traditional fishing gear, presenting tools to the fishing sector to improve the management of marine areas of special environmental richness.

Specific objectives:

  • To characterize the survival rates of the main species caught in these waters with artisanal fishing.
  • Assess the resilience of species that survive artisanal fisheries.
  • Train fishers and other sectors to improve fishing practices and increase catch survival.
  • To publicize the results as a possible solution for the reduction of discards.
  1. Task planning and search for relevant bibliography.
  2. To evaluate the survival rates of gillnet-caught shrimp.
  3. To evaluate the survival rates of galley caught by gillnet.
  4. To assess the survival rates of longline-caught fish.
  5. To assess the survival rates of fish caught by gillnet.
  6. Physiological evaluation of recovery after fishing.
  7. Training activities.
  8. Dissemination of the project.
  9. Preparation of the final report of the project.

The project, whose main objective was to characterize the survival rates of the main species caught in the waters of the Gulf of Cadiz fishing with artisanal fishing, has carried out a survival study of different species caught by gillnets and longlines.
The results of the project highlight the direct contact with the artisanal fishing sector, carrying out a transversal learning between the academic and fishing worlds.
This has been possible thanks to the different training workshops organized and the meetings held with the different agents of the sector.
