RMGFIII – MARINE RESERVES, FUTURE-PROOFING III

Pleamar program

Description

Spain’s Marine Reserves are spaces identified for their ability to regenerate fishing and natural resources. Among the many social and natural benefits they provide, the “reserve effect” stands out, which involves the significant recovery of fishing grounds for the protection of the reproduction of species, thanks to the meeting of artisanal fishermen, scientists and administrations. And this project is along these lines, which seeks to position the figure of Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest as a success story of social and environmental sustainability.

The campaign will generate different graphic and documentary materials on the values of the Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest, which will seek to increase the knowledge of the general public about these spaces, as well as attract the participation of private entities towards this project and those related to this figure of environmental protection.

The project has highlighted the value of the activity carried out in the Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest, generating new content and media strategies for dissemination among the general public. Various types of actions have been combined:

The exhibition designed on Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest has been shown at five ADIF stations, within its “Open Station” program: Chamartín, Atocha, Valencia Nord, Alicante Terminal, Murcia del Carmen. In addition, it had a presence at the Moda Shopping Center in Madrid.

For the second year, the National Museum of Natural Sciences has hosted the exhibition “Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest. History, culture, tradition and sustainability”, visited by more than 30,000 visitors.

The project was also present at the 15th edition of the National Environmental Congress (CONAMA), held from 31 May to 3 June 2021, at the Palacio de Exposiciones in Madrid. Specifically, the project was presented in the Conama 2020 innovation project dissemination space, Conama Innova, where the actions carried out to value the RMIP and its protagonists: fishermen, divers, scientists and administrations were presented.

On the other hand, the content of the document manager developed in the previous phases of the campaign for the General Secretariat of Fisheries and on the project website has been maintained and expanded.

As for the dissemination of the campaign, it has focused on the written press, digital, radio, web and social networks. Specifically, 25 radio programs have been made on “Al otro lado del Espejo” of Aolde Radio, in the specific section “Reserved Matter”, with interviews with protagonists of the sectors that operate in marine reserves. Within the programme, a specific space has been dedicated to the role of women in these areas, “Women in Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest”, with interviews with women from the sectors involved.

In addition, the Field Notebook has been designed and prepared, a compilation of files on the most significant species that can be observed in the different marine reserves of fishing interest.

Training and awareness-raising actions aimed at children have also been carried out, with five days in educational centers in Madrid and Almeria, which have had the participation of more than 385 schoolchildren.

In order to attract the participation of private entities, an information brochure has been designed on the Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest in Spain and on some specific projects, which has been sent to more than 200 private entities likely to finance projects of this nature.

The final presentation of results was held, with the presence of institutional representatives and representatives of the different sectors involved: research, fishing, conservation or diving, among others.
