The main objective of the project is to establish the bases for a more sustainable and less impactful development of extractive activity that contributes to achieving the good environmental status of the marine environment.
To this end, the following specific objectives are developed:
The project has made it possible to advance in knowledge related to marine noise, in continuity with the advances in SILENCIO, data collection has been improved, as well as the characterization of natural and human sources, improving the installation of the hydrophone and including light pollution sensors to obtain data on the quality of the sky continuously and permanently over time. In addition, not only have improvements been implemented in the algorithm for detecting natural (cetacean) and human (boat) sound events, but the visualization tool has been updated so that it is open and accessible to all types of users.
Likewise, the new implementations have been tested in the data collected by the OBSEA observatory during the previous project to check the efficiency of the algorithm developed in other Coastal Observatories and to move forward with the monitoring of marine noise to see if it is possible to extend the benefits of the project to other geographical areas. In parallel, further tests and improvements have been developed on the electric propulsion prototype developed at SILENCIO, testing new components, adding robustness and increasing reliability to the outboard drive system. Consequently, a first comparative study has been carried out on the incidence of noise from auxiliary machinery with traditional motorisation (combustion) against a new electric motorisation of the devices.
Finally, new studies have been carried out to analyse the fishing fleet and identify use cases for the small fleet, both in the area of Galicia and in other parts of Spain (Catalonia, Valencia and Andalusia). The collaboration of the fishing sector and the involvement of its social fabric have been key to the successful achievement of the project. It is therefore worth noting the importance of empowering them as they are part of the solution.
