Description
Through this project, SUBMON has opted to maintain and reduce the mortality of the population of sea turtles and protected species after their accidental capture by artisanal fisheries in Andalusia and Murcia.
Applying a training approach with the fishing sector, scientific and technical staff has generated commitments of good practices for the handling of accidentally caught sea turtles. They have also expanded their training in the different fishing gears from the fishing boats themselves in order to produce graphic and specific material for each fishery.
Most of the actions have required a high degree of involvement with other beneficiary entities and collaborators of the project to facilitate the approach and participation of the fishing sector. This coordination has contributed to the strengthening of relationships and exchange of knowledge among the diversity of actors involved in the conservation of marine protected species.

The actions that have been carried out:
- Fishermen’s training workshops
- Distribution of “Kit for the release of protected marine species”
- Placement of 15 sea turtle maintenance tanks
- Specific training workshops for observers and related personnel
- Boarding on fishing boats of different artisanal fishing gear for image taking
- Taking images with turtles housed in the Marine Fauna Recovery Centres of Algeciras and Malaga
- Creating a Training DVD for Fishermen
