VALACUI – Innovative strategies for the recovery of aquaculture waste

Pleamar program

Description:

The project aimed to contribute to the sustainability of aquaculture activity and the efficient use of resources in the field of recovery of aquaculture waste, more specifically, of organic by-products generated in aquaculture.

Through the creation of a contrast table, made up of all the stakeholders in the aquaculture value chain, the needs and problems in the field of aquaculture waste have been identified, being able to define the expectations of the future. Likewise, solutions have been sought that comply with the principle of prioritisation of uses of food by-products set by the European Commission; The first option always seeks to take advantage of by-products to create new products that can be used for human food, additives, cosmetic or pharmaceutical use. The second assesses whether the resulting product can be used in animal feed. Finally, in the fractions of lower value and less suitable for other uses, their capacity to obtain energy was studied.

With the information and methodology suitably structured and contrasted, it has been transferred to the sector through the preparation of a guide/manual to select the most appropriate recovery option for each specific case. Workshops have also been held to transfer the results of the project to the different actors involved in the aquaculture by-product recovery chain.

General Objective:

To encourage sustainable aquaculture and the efficient use of resources by promoting innovation and knowledge transfer in the field of valuation of aquaculture by-products.

Specific objectives:

  1. To contrast the problems and future expectations of the agents of interest, as well as the results obtained in relation to the valorization of aquaculture by-products.
  2. To provide the aquaculture sector with options for the valorisation of by-products of the aquaculture value chain.
  3. To provide the sector with the criteria for selecting the best recovery options, as well as the best strategy for implementing these recovery options.
  4. Transfer and disseminate the objectives of the project, its progress and its results.

In the VALACUI project, the problems and expectations of aquaculture stakeholders have been contrasted through bilateral meetings. The objective of this task was to collect and organize existing information to focus efforts on the most important issues in the aquaculture value chain.

As a result, the “Guide to the recovery of aquaculture by-products” has been prepared where information on the state of the art of more than 30 recovery processes has been compiled and analyzed. For its preparation, the problems and expectations of aquaculture stakeholders have been contrasted through bilateral meetings, surveys, contrast table and transfer workshops with the sector. The most relevant evaluation parameters for the selection of valuation options were compiled, including a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methodology, supported by a hierarchical process analysis (AHP). The study addressed all the critical conditioning factors that can influence the technical, economic and environmental viability of the solution. These were grouped into four main categories: aspects related to the study scenario, technical parameters, market aspects and economic parameters.
