EMPHATIC will address the challenges of monitoring cetaceans based on their distribution and health status, and respond to policy needs by developing relevant indicators of the status of cetacean populations. The project combines several emerging research topics, using non-invasive techniques applicable to these animals:
Environmental DNA (eDNA) to assess distribution; respiratory tract microbiome study; drone-collected images for photogrammetry to assess body condition; and hormone content to derive stress levels.
