Mitigation of the landscape and environmental effects derived from urban expansion and improvement of the ecological and social connectivity of Alcabre-Navia (Alcabre Verde)

The Alcabre Verde project has as its scope of action the parish and area of influence of Alcabre, an area that has been diagnosed with poor functionality and ecological quality of public spaces and green areas, lack of landscape continuity between urban, agroforestry and coastal systems, alteration of coastal dynamics, loss of associated ecosystem services as a result of agricultural abandonment and scrubland and disconnection between Alcabre and the rest of the parishes. Based on this problem, four actions are proposed that will be framed in the Renaturalization Strategy of the municipality of Vigo that will be developed within the framework of the project.

It is a good example of how to address the impact of the dynamics of fragmentation of urban space, restoring ecological connectivity through renaturation.
Transformation of Avenida de Europa into an ecological connector: this avenue articulates the expansion of the city from the urban center to the Samil beach system. The renaturalisation of the Avenida Europa axis is proposed through the establishment of a vegetated ditch such as SUDS, planting of trees, establishment of stewardship agreements with owners of the plots adjacent to the avenue, etc. 2) Renaturalisation of the Alcabre coastline through actions to improve connectivity and renaturalise green spaces. forest masses and existing open spaces. 3) Renaturalization and humanization of the VG-20 (main artery of entry and exit of goods to the port of Vigo), improving permeability and connectivity between the neighborhoods of Alcabre and Bouzas through the reforestation of the green roofs located on the VG-20 and the creation of green pedestrian itineraries. 4) Improvement of the urban green infrastructure of the Alcabre-Navia neighbourhoods.
