This project aims to develop and validate tools to certify essential ecosystem services, with the purpose of integrating them into nature credit schemes. To this end, it will carry out actions related to the design of methodologies, validation of indicators and certification regulations, and will create a carbon credit registry, with protocols for their integration. All this is intended to achieve results related to the increase of carbon (358,000 ha), water (32,000 ha) and biodiversity (255,000 ha) services, in addition to improving or creating new green infrastructures on 150km of the French Camino de Santiago and providing 140,000 inhabitants with access to these services.

The project includes, among its results, the promotion of forest harvesting/sustainable forest management in 358,000 ha (carbon services), 32,000 ha (water services) and 255,000 ha (biodiversity services), as well as in 150 km linked to the socio-cultural services of the French Camino de Santiago, 600 km2 + 150 km (French Camino de Santiago) of improved or created green infrastructures and 140,000 inhabitants with access to new green infrastructures. In addition, this approach will be replicable and transferable throughout the network of certified forests: 2,951,900 ha. It also includes a communication plan, digital tools, audiovisual content and face-to-face actions adapted to technical audiences and the general public.

Promote the bioeconomy, promoting the development, improvement and consolidation of green infrastructure, connectivity, the restoration of degraded ecosystems and multifunctional landscapes, with the aim of increasing biodiversity and its conservation, adaptation to climate change, the prevention of forest fires and the fight against desertification, while generating opportunities and employment in rural areas and contributing to the fight against the demographic challenge.

All the actions of the project will focus on the following lines of work:

  • Carbon ecosystem services.
  • Ecosystem services.
  • Biodiversity and landscape.
  • Recreational, cultural and social services.
  • Coordination and execution.
  • Communication and awareness.
  • Territorial activation of carbon ecosystem services.
  • Restoration and valorization of water resources in forest systems.
  • Recognition and management of biodiversity and its link with the landscape.
  • Community promotion of recreational, social, cultural and spiritual ecosystem services.
