As a result of the project, an area of 1,667,239m2 is expected to be renaturalized.
The project stands out for its transformative nature, as it is an intervention in a large north-south corridor fragmented by the railway, and for the resilient nature of the actions, which will be carried out in abandoned and underused areas that will be recovered and connected, benefiting densely populated neighborhoods, some of them in vulnerable situations. It also highlights the adequate participatory structure of the project and the approach of land stewardship agreements to guarantee the management and monitoring of biodiversity, where the Tormes-EB Foundation will act. The project is consistent with local plans and strategies and has great social support.
The project proposes the following actions: 1) the restoration and renaturalization of the old “Volcán de Garrido” dump and the urban section of the disused railway called “Vía de la Plata”, for its conversion into the North node of connectivity of the ecological corridor of the project; 2) the creation of urban forests on four degraded plots next to the railway; 3) forest management actions for the improvement of the urban river section on the Tormes River; 4) the generation of educational and neighbourhood gardens on degraded land and 5) the renaturalisation of urban spaces included within the Green Rails corridor through the elimination of tiling, the modification of tree pits for floodable flowerbeds, the planting of native shrub species, the creation of plant covers, etc.
