The INTEGRA project is proposed at a key moment for conservation in Spain, coinciding with the updating of the national Red List, the creation of the National KBA Coordination Group and the end of the MEDCONECTA project. Its development will consolidate international commitments such as the 30×30 Target of the CBD’s Global Biodiversity Framework, the EU Restoration Regulation and the National Strategy for Green Infrastructure, Connectivity and Ecological Restoration. INTEGRA will strengthen ecological coherence, resilience to climate change and the provision of ecosystem services, providing knowledge applied to national and regional territorial planning.
Generate knowledge to advance the spatial integration of the three key elements of Green Infrastructure (VI): biodiversity, ecosystem services and connectivity by exploring how to design an ecologically coherent IV network, resilient to climate change and capable of continuing to provide benefits to society.
The project focuses on the identification of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) through the collection of species data, the application of international criteria and consultation with relevant actors, culminating in their review and official nomination. From there, the MEDCONECTA model will be applied to analyse existing and potential green infrastructure corridors, identify priority areas for action at national level and assess the coherence between the KBAs and the Natura 2000 Network. Subsequently, the integration of green infrastructure in territorial planning will be promoted, adapting results at the regional level and developing case studies. All this will be supported by a coordination, communication and knowledge transfer strategy, which includes events, workshops, informative materials and a specific microsite to ensure the dissemination and practical application of the results.
