SABERES DO MONTE. Traditional knowledge and stewardship for the conservation of a living forest.

FEDER

The project promotes the bioeconomy in the mountains of Galicia by combining science and local knowledge for the conservation of species of interest and habitats of high ecological value. To this end, it develops strategic planning actions for green infrastructure, ecological restoration and strengthening of forest governance. In addition, it consolidates previous initiatives, such as the collective brand Sabores de Montes, and incorporates innovative financing mechanisms. With all this, they intend to achieve results in biodiversity conservation and climate resilience (recovering and conserving 47 species of interest and 10 habitats of high ecological value, ecologically restoring 8,100 ha, and signing 5 stewardship agreements for 15,000 ha), and socio-economic revitalization of the territory, with innovative financing mechanisms that are expected to be designed for 34 forests.

This project aims to develop stewardship agreements for the improvement of local green infrastructure based on the conservation and restoration of mountain habitats of community interest maintained by traditional activities in mountain communities in Galicia.

  • Characterize habitats and ecosystem services associated with traditional systems of high natural value as a basis for planning the local economy.
  • Consolidate collaborative, nested territorial governance with a gender focus through stewardship agreements.
  • Restore and conserve ecosystems, prioritizing habitats of community interest and nature-based solutions to improve biodiversity, ecological connectivity and adaptation to climate change.
  • Design and promote innovative biodiversity financing mechanisms that ensure long-term conservation
  • To value sustainable products and services from activities that contribute to the conservation of habitats, through the collective brand “Saberes do Monte”, promoting green employment and value chains linked to biodiversity.
  • Transfer knowledge, communicate results and ensure the effective coordination of the project, facilitating its replicability and territorial scalability.
  • Improving green infrastructure based on habitats of community importance linked to practices
  • Improved governance through land stewardship.
  • Restoration and improvement in strategic areas of the green infrastructure designed for each mountain pilot area.
  • Evaluation and promotion of innovative financing mechanisms for biodiversity conservation.
  • Promotion of the collective brand Saberes do Monte as a market tool for the valorization of extensive livestock farming, beekeeping and ecotourism associated with the conservation of mountain habitats.
  • Communication, transfer and replicability of the project.
  • Project management, coordination and monitoring.
  • 170km2 of improved green infrastructure and 1,661,508 inhabitants with access to new green infrastructure.
  • 47 species and 10 habitats favored by the project.
  • Mapping and characterization of habitats generating a Green Infrastructure Strategic Planning Report
  • Strengthening governance with stewardship agreements in 5 pilot areas, assuming 15,000 ha revised, expanded or updated, and including participatory forest planning. 5 territorial governance groups constituted.
  • Ecological restoration in 8,100 ha (100 ha in mountain pilot areas and monitoring in more than 450 ha), as a continuation of the monitoring of previous restorations (CAPRIF-CC, LIFE in Common Land, RURALtXA), which will allow follow-up periods of 6-10 years.
  • Design and implementation of innovative financing mechanisms in 34 participating forests (payments for conservation results, biodiversity credits and forest certification of ecosystem services). Publication of a guide to innovative financing mechanisms in areas of high biodiversity value.
  • 950 ha of total forest area where sustainable forest management, pasture use and extensive livestock farming can be promoted.
  • 37 jobs generated directly and indirectly by the project, 25 in restoration tasks; 38 companies supported or consolidated (local environmental and forestry consultancies, self-employed people who promote the brand…). 529 women involved in the project.
  • 12 municipalities where socio-economic activities are promoted (activities linked to extensive livestock farming, beekeeping and ecotourism, and innovative mechanisms for financing biodiversity).
