Assessment and assessment of the potential ecological and social impacts of offshore wind farms in areas of high biodiversity and high LANDSCAPE value: the example of Cap de Creus/Gulf of Roses (BIOPAIS)

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

In the Spanish Mediterranean there are proposals that propose the construction of wind farms in areas that have a high biodiversity, a great landscape value and are located near protected marine areas. This project aims to assess the potential ecological and social impacts of large offshore wind farms in the Spanish Mediterranean taking as a case study the first major project proposed in the area of Cap de Creus (Costa Brava). Through an interdisciplinary approach that considers sensitive species, fragile habitats, fishery resources, landscape and society, the project aims to contribute to avoiding or minimising the ecological and social impacts of these wind farms. The results will allow offshore managers to better plan offshore wind in Spain and make decisions based on scientific knowledge, thus contributing to making offshore wind compatible

BIOPAIS will analyse the potential ecological and social impacts of large offshore wind farms in the Spanish Mediterranean, taking as a case study the first major project proposed in the area of Cap de Creus/Gulf of Roses (Costa Brava), to help avoid or minimise the impacts of offshore wind on marine biodiversity and the landscape. An interdisciplinary approach will be carried out that considers sensitive species, fragile habitats, fishery resources, landscape and society. The results will allow marine managers to better plan offshore wind energy in Spain and make decisions based on scientific knowledge, which will contribute to its compatibility with the protection of biodiversity and the landscape.
