The City Council of Santa Coloma de Gramanet undertakes, with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, the renaturalisation of spaces in the Besós River Park within the framework of the Preliminary Project for a Biodiversity Refuge in the Besos River, drawn up by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) in 2019. On a large scale, it aspires to generate an ecological connector between two protected natural areas, Collserola and the Serralada de Marina.
The space where the action is being carried out was subject to environmental recovery at the end of the 90s, opening a new public green area to the city. The total area of the action in the area of Santa Coloma de Gramenet is 134,875 m2 and is carried out in phases. Phase I is already being executed, with this project being the one that will implement its Phase II.
This project gives continuity to a first phase of intervention in this river environment, already executed. Now, the city council of Santa Coloma de Gramanet plans to continue improving the ecological conditions of the river as it passes through the city, through a proposal for the original renaturation of a river area. To this end, it applies nature-based solutions aimed at increasing the complexity of spaces, generating new biotopes, managing the threat of invasive species in the river environment and making public use subject to the promotion of biodiversity.
Its actions address environmental regeneration and the recovery of flora and fauna, as well as the removal of invasive alien species. On a large scale, it is aspired to generate an ecological connector between two protected natural areas near the city: Collserola and the Serralada de Marina.
