Bioeconomic forest transformation project in Nogueira de Ramuín through the recovery of the aged forest for its appropriate use (TRANBIOFOR-NR).

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

The TRANBIOFOR-NR project will seek to recover the chestnut forests of the Moura mountain by identifying the genotype of the trees in order to carry out new plantations and/or grafting of chestnut trees resistant to climate changes and pests. The eco-sustainable use of existing cork oaks and strawberry trees will also be studied.

Due to the special nature of ownership in the Montes de Mano común, there is a certain amount of abandonment of the forest stands. Specifically, the chestnut forest is very old and in a state of near abandonment due to the lack of resources for its proper exploitation. For its recovery, it is essential to carry out projected silvicultural treatments in the existing stand.

This project will allow the transformation of the Moura mountain from a scarcely productive area to one that is well exploited from a bioeconomic point of view. In addition, it is intended to be a pilot project that can be replicated in the rest of the communities of forests in the Community of Galicia and other existing ones in Castilla León and Asturias. Thanks to this initiative, green employment will be generated through the creation of a center for the interpretation of the chestnut forest and its ecosystem, the creation of guided routes along the existing paths in the forest to understand its richness, not only natural but also bioeconomic, and a composting plant will be built.

The main objective of the project is to improve the conservation status of selected forest ecosystems, their biodiversity, their connectivity and their role in green infrastructure, through their protection, conservation and ecological restoration and through the ecosystem approach to sustainable forest management including the conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic resources and the protection of mature forests.

  • Silvicultural treatments in chestnut forests to improve their use and fire prevention.
  • Identification of genotypes of traditional chestnut varieties.
  • New plantations with resistant clones.
  • Silvopastoral use and pollinator vectors.
  • Creation of an Interpretation Center.
  • Fitting out of a space for an auditorium and lookout point.
  • Women as drivers of green jobs: bush interpretation trails.
  • Construction of composting plant.
  • Project coordination.
  • Communication and awareness plan.
  • Integration of gender aspects.
