Boosting the preparation for reuse of post-consumer textile waste and its high-quality recycling in Spain through investment in innovative smart sorting technologies

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

The entities, Fundación Pueblo para el pueblo (Humana), whose activity focuses on the collection, classification and sale for reuse of the textile waste it collects through containers on public roads, and CENTRE GESTIO MEDIOAMBIENTAL, S.L. (CGM), dedicated to the management of waste from different sectors, make up a group in which they propose a project based on increasing the amount of post-consumer textile waste destined for reuse and, failing that, promote their reintroduction into the production chain through high-quality recycling. To this end, in the first instance, Humana at its plant in Leganés (Madrid), proposes an investment in the Valvan sorting system, which will involve mechanizing its sorting system and installing auxiliary laundry systems, which will maximize the amount of post-consumer textile waste destined for reuse. On the other hand, the fraction of waste that cannot be reused will be transferred to the CGM entity at its plant in Igualada (Barcelona), which will invest in carrying out the first phase of recycling through upcycling thanks to the PICVISA classification system, in addition, the investment entails an adaptation of the facilities that requires civil works.

Increase the amount of post-consumer textile waste destined for reuse, while carrying out high-quality recycling of the non-reusable fraction. The main results pursued with the project are:-reduce by 1.5% by Humana, the amount of waste destined for recycling, since it will be reclassified as suitable for reuse,- reduce by 1% by Humana, the amount of post-consumer textile waste derived to landfill, since it will be destined to an upcycling process carried out by CGM,- it is estimated that of the amount of waste received by CGM, 70% will be recovered through upcycling to continue with recovery within the textile sector.- In addition, Humana expects a 37% reduction in waste generated during the production process, specifically by reducing raffia bags (big bags) commonly used in its activity.
