Circular economy in nonwovens manufactured using spunlace technology

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

BC NONWOVENS SL is an entity that manufactures, manufactures and markets spunlace non-woven fabric for the cleaning wipes market and also for medical and industrial applications. They currently have 3 production lines of nonwovens using spunlace technology. The process consists of transforming segmented fiber of 38-40mm in length into consolidated fabric by means of water injection. The usual raw material is virgin segmented fibre of viscose, polyester or polypropylene, while the final product is fabric delivered in the format of reels with a diameter of 1.2m and a specific width to be defined by each customer.

The project proposes a series of improvements in the design and acquisition of new machinery to reduce the environmental impact of nonwovens by replacing virgin raw material with recycled raw material and acting on waste, reducing its generation and optimizing its reuse and recycling. The project aims to achieve an environmental improvement of approximately 5% compared to the current situation.

The objective of the project is to generate improvements in design and invest in machinery that allows them to reduce the environmental impact of non-wovens (whose final application is usually in single-use products), replacing virgin raw material with recycled and acting on waste, reducing its generation and optimizing its reuse and recycling through 4 very specific activities:

  1. REDUCE WASTE AND WASTE DUE TO FAULTY CUTTING BETWEEN COILS.
  2. REPLACE CONSUMPTION OF VIRGIN POLYESTER FIBRE WITH RECYCLED POLYESTER.
  3. INCREASE THE REUSE OF ONLINE SELVEDGE WASTE AND OFFLINE RECYCLED RAW MATERIAL.
  4. REUSE LOSSES FROM THE END OF MASTER ROLL.

With the proposed results, it is considered that there will be approximately a 5% improvement over the current situation.
