Conservation and protection of threatened marine species (sea turtles, cetaceans and sharks) in the Balearic Islands (OCEMIB)

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

Sea turtles, cetaceans and sharks are indicators of the health of marine ecosystems. The Balearic Sea is an important habitat for these migratory species, which currently face serious conservation problems, both of anthropogenic and natural origin, resulting in episodes of stranding of live or dead specimens. Therefore, it is necessary to provide systematic assistance to these strandings.
In the case of live animals, adequate care must be offered to ensure their recovery and subsequent release. In the case of live and dead animals, data must be taken and biological samples collected.
The objective is to contribute, together with other entities, to increase scientific and technical knowledge about the current state of the populations of these species, and to create a standardized network on which to base the management and conservation of these species.
