The Province of Granada has 6,765 km of rivers, and according to the diagnosis made in the Hydrological Plan of the Guadalquivir Demarcation 2016/2021, the state of the surface water bodies of Granada (considering the chemical and ecological states) is “good” in 64.6% of the rivers, compared to 35.4% (more than 2,300km of rivers in the province) that are in a deficient state.

PCRG will focus on eight urban sections of the Genil, Cubillas and Guadalfeo rivers. It will deal with ecological restoration through nature-based solutions in three of the sections; the diagnosis of the state of the rivers in five of the sections; advice on the problems associated with the deterioration and increase in the risk of flooding and the increase in knowledge by citizens of environmental values and ecological awareness in the protection of rivers.

Some of the actions included in this project are:

  • Participatory strategy for the diagnosis and renaturalization of the Genil River as it passes through Villanueva Mesía and as it passes through Huétor Tajar.
  • Participatory strategy for the diagnosis and renaturalization of the Cubillas River as it passes through Iznalloz and as it passes through Deifontes and Pinos Puente.
