Urban environments

Status:

En ejecución

Location:

Écija, Seville (Andalusia)

Execution date:

2022

01/10/2022 - 31/12/2025

Total budget:

Amount of aid from the Biodiversity Foundation:

€3,789,968

Coordinating entity:

Ecija City Council

The response given to the floods does not completely eliminate the risks of flooding and has had the undesired effect of estrangement from the river that has always been part of Écija.

With partners such as AMAYA or Universidad Coruña, the City Council has been reflecting since 2020 on the application of the latest technologies and NBS for risk mitigation and water stress.

FLUBIOGENIL proposes a battery of mutually supportive measures that respond to historical citizen demands and opportunities for the application of NBS identified in Écija as a pilot city of the Interreg AA-FLOODS Project, funded by the EU to improve Flood Risk Prevention and Management at local levels in the EU. The actions will be implemented both in the urban section and in the course of the Genil River upstream of Écija, in order to mitigate the risk of flooding and improve the river ecosystem.

Some of the actions included in this project are:

  • Recovery of the original course of the Genil River and Urban river restoration: San Francisco Meander.
  • Renaturation of urban floodplain (Ecological Reserve).
  • River restoration and flood risk mitigation: Recovery of channels in blocked meanders upstream of Écija, with effects on flood retention.
  • Channel Recovery, Flood Risk Adaptation and Mitigation: River Restoration in Meanders Blocked by Agriculture.
  • Flood retention and aquifer recharge in buffer agricultural plain.
