The northeastern regions of Granada suffer an alarming depopulation and aging of its population, coupled with a critical abandonment of the management of forests and historical systems of water management, mainly derived from the low profitability of timber. Improved forest-hydrological management would have important positive environmental, social and economic effects.
REVIERTE, as a chain project, intends to carry out its actions by promoting public-private governance of the forest and providing, from scientific knowledge, a silvicultural model and tools for a management that values the forest in all its dimensions, including the ecosystem services they provide. We will also innovate by creating new technical products from local wood and transferring them to the industry for use in construction. All this with the seal of sustainable forest management throughout the value chain. In this way, REVIERTE will reactivate the management of Granada’s forests, promoting development in depopulated rural areas, while preserving the ecosystem services provided by its forests.
The main objective is to act throughout the forestry value chain (forest-industry), applying an integrated forestry and hydrological management approach that values wood and water resources as a strategy to reverse the current dynamics of depopulation and aging in the northeast of the province of Granada. The REVIERTE project aims to conserve and improve traditional water management in Granada, as well as to increase the resilience of forest stands and water resources in the face of climate change.
