On the island of La Gomera, invasive species represent a serious threat to environmental conservation and the island’s economy and, in fact, there have been numerous cases of fires on the island whose common denominator has been, on the one hand, adverse weather (heat, low humidity and/or wind) and, on the other hand, the presence, among others, of of sugarcane fields.
The displacement of native species, the alteration of ecosystems and the existence of the common cane – a species whose presence leads to the generation and spread of fires – are problems associated with the existence of invasive species in the ravines of the island of La Gomera. The importance of maintaining the biodiversity of the area, while contributing to the mitigation of climate change are elements that have been taken into account in the project, so all actions will be aimed not only at eliminating the invasive species, but also at promoting the comprehensive recovery of the ravine, also reducing the risk of flooding with potentially serious consequences. thanks to the cleaning of the riverbed.
Some of the actions included in this project are:
Landscape restoration and removal of Arundo Donax (common reed) in the ravine bed of Valle Gran Rey and the ravine of Hermigua
