New innovative thermofusion production line for the manufacture of nonwovens from biodegradable polyester fibre (PES)

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

PIEL SA is a company that is dedicated to the production and distribution of fabrics for different industrial sectors, focusing on home textiles and industrial textiles. The project seeks the acquisition of innovative machinery to generate a new production line of 100% biodegradable wadding/napa using ECOEN biodegradable fiber as raw material (biodegradability according to ISO 21701, ASTM D5511 and ASTM D 6691) and which guarantees biodegradability in landfill and ocean in less than 3 years. Among the proposed results is the replacement of up to 33% of biodegradable fibers in relation to the total production of wadding/napa of the entity, the reuse of 14% of losses in the process itself and the improvement of the environmental footprint of the product.

The objective of this project is to implement a biodegradable wadding/napa production line that uses biodegradable polyester fiber as raw material in the entity’s facilities, currently produced from polyester (75%) and Low Melt-biocomponent (25%). With this new installation, 33% of the ground water marketed by Piel SA will be biodegradable. In addition, the new facility will also be designed to meet the following secondary environmental objectives:

  • Reduction of the generation of waste and waste from the process, all fiber waste and products that do not meet the quality criteria will be reintroduced into the production process instead of being discarded.
  • Reducing the use of plastic polymers that can lead to the unintentional release of microplastics. Ecoen’s biodegradability is guaranteed to be 63.6% in 526 days by the ASTM D 6691 method, which simulates marine degradation.
  • Reduction of the product’s environmental footprint.
