The project aims to renaturalize and improve the fluvial environment of the Castaños-Galindo river in Barakaldo, a natural enclave that has been greatly altered during the industrial development of the 20th century, losing much of the ecological and social value that this fluvial habitat represents for the city. The PRIEFCG actions are aimed at the recovery of the Castaños-Galindo river environment from an integrating perspective, to achieve a fully functional river ecosystem that generates benefits in the different processes of the city as an ecological corridor, a healthy space for leisure, an enclave for awareness and transformation of the environment, a vehicle for flood mitigation and a support for biodiversity. This project aims to give continuity to the process of change that Barakaldo has been carrying out in recent years. The renaturation of the Castaños-Galindo river involves recovering a backbone on which to build a new, more resilient city.

• Diagnosis and preparation of the Integral Recovery Plan for the urban-rural fluvial environment of the Castaños and Galindo rivers.
• Hydrological study, diagnosis and action plan for flood remediation measures and protection of flood-prone areas.
• Planting and recovery of riparian vegetation and forest.
• Improvement of the landscape and the environmental quality of the river environment, with promotion of wildlife biodiversity
• Management, control of invasive vegetation and establishment of a monitoring and rapid action system.
• Refurbishment, sustainable mobility and creation of a healthy space for recreation and outreach
