Production of regenerated yarn from discarded coffee or cocoa bags, as well as post-consumer garments

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

JESUS RUBIO SL is a small company dedicated to the manufacture and marketing of recycled yarn, from various materials, with wool being its hallmark. To make their carded yarns, they use natural products that are unusual in the textile industry, currently being studied jute or pineapple. In addition, they are committed to the local economy, through close collaboration and synergies with surrounding companies that cover the entire value chain.

The project seeks to set up an area for receiving, cleaning and removing improper jute bags from discarded coffee and cocoa bags (thus also reducing waste sent by third parties to landfill) and to acquire a series of equipment that allows the bags and post-consumer garments to be shredded and shredded into fibers that have a suitable consistency for the production of yarn according to the carding spinning system that the company provides.

This project aims at the same time to recycle third-party waste and reduce the consumption of virgin raw material, by acquiring discarded jute sacks and woolen garments, which would otherwise be sent to landfills, and turning them into raw material for the production of high-quality and GRS-certified yarn. The introduction of recycled fibres from post-consumer garments into the process will allow the company to reduce the use of virgin wool, which will also lead to a reduction in emissions, water consumption and the use of pesticides linked to the manufacturing process of natural fibres. On the other hand, the jute fibers from discarded coffee and cocoa bags will be conditioned. The final material is intended to be biodegradable yarns, which means that garments made from yarn made from recycled materials will then have low-energy recycling. The project will allow a 30% substitution of virgin raw material for secondary raw material, 90% recovery of products and a 40% reduction of virgin wool in the production process, with a reduction of 16 tons of virgin wool to manufacture the same amount of product.
