Restoration and environmental recovery of Mount Gibralfaro and its ecological connection with Mount Victoria and Malaga’s green infrastructure network (ECONECTA GIBRALFARO).

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

The general objective of the project is to reverse the processes of fragmentation and degradation of ecosystems, loss of biodiversity and disconnection of the population from the natural environment caused by urban development. By means of a restoration and suture action in the green heart of the city, the green infrastructure network is structured on a territorial scale, which will serve as a basis for the development of urban biodiversity, the provision of ecosystem services and the well-being and health of citizens.

Malaga has a network of urban and periurban forest areas, natural green areas with a high value as ecosystem services. Most of these parks are reforestation forests with low biodiversity, which show symptoms of evolutionary delay or slowdown, attributable to the territorial disconnection from the natural matrix. This makes them more vulnerable to climate change, especially to forest fires, erosion and torrential rains. Among all of them, Mount Gibralfaro is one of the main green infrastructures due to its location and its high representative value. For this reason, it has been chosen as a pilot project for the renaturation of this type of green area, so that it can serve as a model of experience transferable to other similar areas within the city’s green infrastructure network.

  • Ecological connection of Mount Gibralfaro and Victoria (restoration of ecological connectivity through topographic restitution of the original terrain between both mountains and creation of an eco-pipeline).
  • Renaturalization and environmental recovery of the Gibralfaro mountain:
    • Improvement of physical, chemical and hydrological properties of the soil.
    • Reduced runoff, erosion control and increased infiltration
    • Revegetation with native species
    • Rehabilitation of water points for amphibians, creation of shelters for reptiles and provision of nesting boxes for insectivores and nocturnal birds of prey.
    • Population control of parrots, wild boar, feral cats and exotic species.
  • Creation of meeting spaces
  • Adequacy of active mobility network
  • Governance and participation plan
  • Communication and awareness plan
  • Indicator measurement and monitoring plan
